"Pikas" is created by Lithuanian company "Merakas" Ltd, which is developing solutions in public transport field since 1982. "Pikas" software is highly anticipated in cities, which have all kinds of urban public transport: metro, city trains, buses, trolley-buses, trams, micro buses.
Under such circumstances, the operators of traffics lines have to transport the whole passenger flow that increases and decreases during periods of the day. In such case the timetables can be based not only on connection to simple schedule of metro or city train line, but rather defined by varying passengers' count on the lines of buses, trolley-buses and trams. Within "Pikas", the timetable can be described by a set of time intervals between vehicles required at specified day periods and then calculated automatically.
Another main feature of schedule calculation with "Pikas" is that drivers' shifts are planned without swapping the vehicles. The current "Pikas" users wanted to keep driver working always on the same vehicle during whole shift to avoid driver transfer and standing idle costs, to keep driver out from stress of changing vehicles and lines. Also this forces driver to be careful about his vehicle, so lowering vehicle maintenance and repair costs. To implement this feature "Pikas" combines timetable calculation, trips assignment and shifts cutting in one single process and shows the results in simple, easy to understand and use graphical Schedules Editor.
Usually in a city without metro or city trains a lot of public transport lines have common paths. Using "Pikas" graphical Schedules Editor the schedules for these lines can be synchronized by shifting timetables. After this synchronization the vehicles do not run anymore in flocks on the common paths, equalizing passengers count on the vehicles. This optimization leads to better service and in many cases can also spare trips and reduce vehicles count.
"Pikas" has friendly user interface, easy to use original controls with self-explaining icons and tool tips. Program modules are tightly integrated and accessible with one button click. All data is "at your fingertips" - displayed in one main window, not scattered in a maze of secondary windows or dialog boxes. Digital maps are used for describing and preview of transport network, also for animated demonstration of calculated schedules.
"Pikas" also provides Microsoft Excel add-in for accessing data from "Pikas" database and has data export to included Microsoft Excel reports and Internet pages. The "Pikas" software proves that scheduling tasks can be done in simplified and easier ways.
